with Roberta Whitney, RYT
Sunday, March 25 from 1:00-4:00pm
There are many philosophical concepts that revolve around the idea of cycles or patterns, not only in nature and our relationship to our environment, but also within ourselves. Questions arise: "Why do I feel stuck?" "Why do I make the same mistakes over and over?" "Why can't I seem to progress or feel happier?" These questions ultimately lead to a greater question, "Why do I make the choices I do?"
In most instances these questions relate to and are rooted in our systems of belief and concepts of reality. In other instances we make the choices we make based on our seeking of pleasure, happiness, or gain over our fears of change or loss.
These perpetual inclinations become habits. A habit of checking the doors to make sure they're locked in the evening can promote a sense of safety or comfort. This action happens without us consciously having to think about it or leaving ourselves notes to remember. A custom of eating when we are upset can promote imbalances yet can become a habitual reaction to events even when we realize the problem is still there after we are full.
In Yoga, there is the concept of 'self study' (svadhyaya) which suggests we look at ourselves. Then, having come to an awareness of what we see, we can then be aware of the potential for change and choice. Exploring yogic philosophy can impart in us skills and practices that assist in cultivating more clarity of "where we are" and "who we are" in our day-to-day lives.
We can compliment the practices of yoga (postures, philosophy, breathing, relaxation, meditation) with another model or tool known as the Enneagram. The Enneagram is a nine-point system that helps outline the gifts and challenges of the ego (our sense of individual self). It is a resource that helps us recognize and understand our unique patterns and habits of behavior and thought which are manifested in words and actions.
As we seek to mature and grow in our humanness, we can unmask those roots that cause the behavior or patterns that we find to be undesirable. Change can come as we identify where we are presently and that can add to our contentment and fullness of life. The power of choice can be discovered as we bring clearer intention and attention to understanding and harnessing the mind.
Come discover a new means of deeply connecting with who you are and can be!
